My creative activities are mostly centered on the exploration of the reality of existence. I am driven by my desire to find out the “certainty” of facts and things that are considered true. This desire may be caused by a fear of betrayal towards people. Ironically, many facts can often be verified by reaching inside the other person. Therefore, in my work, I create a unique context for a specific fact and examine if other people can empathize with me. Surprisingly, I can achieve this, even when artistic expression reshapes facts into different shapes or forms. This is possible because understanding and trust are built through the process of verifying and communicating with the other. As a result, when I discover that that the other person’s world is close to mine, (even though it may not be true), I can achieve the “certainty” of existence that I strongly long for.

He identifies himself as a Chinese Malaysian, contemporary artist, and multimedia arts creator. Based in Japan since 1996, Tan has gained favorable reviews and official recognition through his incessant creative activities over the years. To name a few, his first computer-animated short film Snowland won the Award of Digital Contents Grand-Prix Tohoku 1998, while his experimental film Held Even If It Rains was used as the official trailer for Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival 1999.

During his graduate years at Kyoto Seika University, he actively engaged in exhibition planning and took part as curator of the film festival. Stimulated and inspired by contemporary arts, Tan is fond of the integration of artistic forms. The distinctive feature of his artistic expression can be traced to the combination of digital interactive installation and analog technology. His consistent interrogation of the reality of existence has become his recent thematic concept, in which the audience is challenged with exceptional visual experience.
Tan’s representative works include Gel City (interactive projection mapping), Fluid City (live projection of water and oil), Kegare(A documentary film on a Japanese funeral), Papers and Light (pile-ups of paper money), and Post (flashlights in a closed space).
